Who We Are
Gargaar Development Organisation is a community-driven development organisation based in Ajman, UAE, working alongside communities to build resilience, expand opportunity, and create lasting change across education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
Help, support, and a hand up — not a handout
The word Gargaar means "help" or "support" in Somali. It captures the spirit in which our organisation was founded: a belief that meaningful development is not delivered from the outside, but grown from within communities themselves.
Established in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, Gargaar Development Organisation (GDO) began with a small group of educators, health professionals, and community volunteers who shared a conviction: that lasting change happens when people are equipped to lead their own transformation. From an initial focus on school construction and basic health outreach, our work has grown into an integrated portfolio spanning education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and humanitarian relief.
Today we partner with local leaders, governments, foundations, and peer organisations to design programs that are community-led, measurable, and built to endure long after our direct involvement ends. Our base in Ajman connects us to a diverse network of supporters and partners across the region and beyond, while our programs remain rooted in the priorities defined by the communities we serve.
A north star, and a path to get there
Our vision describes the world we are working toward. Our mission describes how we get there — one community, one partnership, one generation at a time.
Our Vision
A world where every community has the capacity, resources, and confidence to shape its own future — where children learn, families thrive, and opportunity is not determined by geography or circumstance.
Our Mission
To walk alongside communities as they identify their own priorities, build their own capacity, and lead their own transformation — through integrated programs in education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and humanitarian relief.
Our core values
These principles shape every decision we make — from how we design a program to how we measure its success and eventually hand it over to the community.
Community First
Communities are not beneficiaries of our work — they are partners and leaders in it. Programs are designed with communities, not for them.
Dignity & Respect
Every person we work with is treated with dignity. Support is offered in a way that honors culture, agency, and self-determination.
Integrity
We hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards of transparency, ethical conduct, and stewardship of the trust and resources placed in our care.
Sustainability
Impact that fades is no impact at all. We design for longevity — building local capacity so communities can sustain progress independently.
Collaboration
No organisation can solve complex challenges alone. We partner openly with governments, NGOs, foundations, and local institutions to multiply our shared impact.
Evidence & Learning
We measure what matters, learn from every outcome, and adapt. Data and reflection keep our work honest, effective, and continuously improving.
Milestones along the way
From a small group of volunteers to an integrated development organisation — every milestone has been shaped by the communities and partners who walked with us.
